I have a lot of thoughts…
And given my unique background as a surgeon with a PhD studying gender stereotypes, I dare say some of them are worth sharing. But finding outlets to do so is challenging. I used to write opinion pieces and spend (too much) time trying to find the right outlet to publish them. I have been somewhat successful at that, having published work in USA Today, TIME Magazine, Scientific American, etc. The slog it is to place pieces, though, has prevented me from writing more.
This is the place
I have thought about starting a Substack for years and just…haven’t. But the more my social media accounts grow, the more fragmented they feel, and I want to have a place that is (mostly) my own. I want to be able to share my thoughts without begging editors for space, and I want it to be easy for people to find me.
I’m hoping…
This will be a community that brings together people who care about human rights, healthcare, feminism, and all the things that make humanity beautiful. Like you, I am a multi-faceted person with a lot of different interests. As a surgeon and gender equity researcher, in my years of micro-blogging (on Twitter, Instagram, and now Bluesky), the themes I frequently return to are feminism, healthcare, misinformation and disinformation, racism, health equity, fertility, and academic medicine. I also had a significant career disruption a few years back, so I sometimes share about what it’s like to give up so much for a career you don’t end up in.
